Women have been around a while. You wouldn't know it looking at much of the popular history media out there. I've devoured history books, podcasts and documentaries most of my life, but I grew frustrated with how few women I saw in them. Great men leading armies aren't uninteresting, but they're not the totality of human experience.
Broad History is a history of the world, of men and women– with female characters plucked out of the shadows for once. Ever looked back at the French Revolution, the Middle Ages or World War II and wondered what it was like for women living through it? Ever asked yourself if they had played a bigger role in historical events than you ever knew? Now there's a podcast to answer these questions. It won't be just queens and suffragettes, and we will resist the "girlbossification" of women's history. (Don't get me started...) We're gonna look at great women, and horrid women, and everyday women, and we'll have fun doing it. Have a listen and become a member to get a whole lot more.
I'm your host, Isabelle Roughol, journalist and public historian based in London. I am French and British but I sound American, and those are the countries I'll mostly focus on. I hold a bachelor's of journalism from the University of Missouri (M-I-Z!) and a master's (graduation pending) of public history from Birkbeck College, University of London. You may know me from my previous podcast Borderline or from many years building the editorial team and products at LinkedIn. I'm passionate about building audience-centric, sustainable indie media organisations, and if you're curious about that, I'm building in public over at isabelleroughol.com. Reply to any of my newsletters to get in touch.
